Year 3 and 4 Visit The Bevis Marks Synagogue
Earlier this term Year 3 and Year 4 were invited to visit the Bevis Marks Synagogue. They had a fabulous day; the weather was sunny and bright with excitement bubbling over on our train journey to London Bridge.
On arrival, our imagination was immediately captured by some 300-year-old graffiti! Did
you know that while the synagogue was being built, a little boy carved his name, in
Hebrew, into one of the bricks. It was amazing to see this piece of history and to think that
graffiti has been happening for centuries.
Venturing deeper into the synagogue our heads raised and our eyes were drawn upwards because above us were seven of the most spectacular chandeliers. Rabbi Morris told us that there were seven to represent every day of the week. Rabbi Morris told us they used a long pole with a candle on the end and it took an hour to light everyone!
We loved our visit, exploring different areas of the synagogue and having the opportunity
to ask questions to deepen and extend our understanding of Judaism, which we studied
last term. Most children commented that it was interesting to see the synagogue and all its
special objects in real life, instead of in a book or on a screen. They said that this was
powerful and seeing them in 3D helped them to understand and realise the significance of
them.
